Why 19mm MgO Board for Passive Fire Protection?

  1. Zero Flame Spread & Low Smoke

MgO boards do not burn. In the event of a fire, they do not contribute fuel to the flames and, crucially, do not emit toxic smoke or “dripping” particulates, which are the primary causes of injury during building evacuations.

  1. Structural Integrity Under Heat

Unlike plywood or OSB, which lose structural capacity quickly when charred, MgO maintains its shape and load-bearing properties for a longer duration under high temperatures. This is vital for maintaining “compartmentation” in multi-story buildings.

  1. Resistance to “Sweating” (Sulfate vs. Chloride)

For 19mm flooring, it is recommended to use Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) based boards.

  • Chloride-free: Prevents the “crying board” phenomenon where moisture leaches out and corrodes metal joists or fasteners.
  • Stability: Sulfate boards offer better dimensional stability in changing humidity, ensuring the T&G joints stay tight.
