Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Structural Insulated Panels

Magnesium oxide (MgO) structural insulated panels, often referred to as MgO SIPs, are a modern building material that combines structural integrity with superior insulation. They are part of the larger family of structural insulated panels (SIPs), which are increasingly being used in residential and commercial construction as a high-performance alternative to traditional stick-built framing.

 

 

What are MgO SIPs?

A structural insulated panel is a composite building material consisting of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings. In the case of MgO SIPs, the facings are magnesium oxide (MgO) boards instead of the more common oriented strand board (OSB) or plywood. The core is typically made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), or polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam.

The Benefits of Using MgO Boards

The use of MgO boards as the facing material gives these SIPs a distinct advantage over their conventional counterparts. MgO is a mineral-based cement that offers a range of superior properties:

  • Exceptional Fire Resistance: MgO is naturally non-combustible. This makes MgO SIPs highly fire-resistant, providing a level of safety that is unmatched by wood-based panels.
  • Moisture and Mold Resistance: Unlike OSB, MgO does not absorb water and is highly resistant to moisture, rot, and decay. Its alkaline nature also makes it inhospitable to mold and mildew growth, contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
  • Dimensional Stability: MgO boards are dimensionally stable, meaning they resist swelling, warping, or shrinking with changes in temperature and humidity. This helps to maintain the integrity of the wall or roof over time.
  • High Strength and Impact Resistance: MgO is an incredibly strong material. This gives the panels high tensile and compressive strength, making them durable and able to withstand impacts.
